Let us learn to recognize the Tsunami

Indonesia is again in mourning. Recently the tsunami in Japan. Let us pray, may the survivors are getting help immediately and get all the ease. May those who died received the grace of God. And pray for those who do not become victims to have concern for helping others. This disaster made me remember how I got to know the tsunami and write this article.

When I worked in Japan's NHK TV bureau in Jakarta (In the early 2000s), one of my tasks is to confirm BMG every time there's an earthquake. Therefore, there is always BMG phone number in contacts list that I carry everywhere.
One of the questions I always ask to BMG of them are: The first question, how many on the Richter scale? (To know the magnitude quake) The second question is how MMI? MMI is the unit to know how an earthquake is felt human (How much damage). Maybe this is a lot of unknown people. The quake occurred far greater if the soil below is not felt, on the contrary smaller earthquakes can be damaging if it is close to the soil surface. So MMI is not entirely the same as on the Richter scale. The third question, is there any possibility of a tsunami? The third question was, was often missed because it was Indonesia (my country) do not know much about the tsunami.

Because they often can be a task like this I finally asked, why NHK very concerned about the earthquake? At that time NHK Jakarta bureau chief just said, there had been an earthquake in Chilie and tsunaminya way to Japan. So whenever there is an earthquake anywhere we have to monitor. In NHK itself is a special section for the earthquake problem. My time did not quite understand and assume it just precaution.

It turned out that my question answered on December 26, 2004. An earthquake under the sea surface in the Indonesian Ocean tsunami caused the largest in history (Indonesia, my country) that I know. The earthquake which occurred near Aceh is sweeping some areas in 11 countries, the victims came from 50 countries, and the number of victims reached 150,000 people (100,000 more of them from Aceh). www.guardian.co.uk The second day after the tsunami, my colleagues and NHK had arrived there to cover and last up to 3 months.
I never thought that my previous employment check the earthquake and tsunami that first possibility I guess just in case, it was not just a job just in case, but it is IMPORTANT work just in case.
From there I began to realize maybe I was still infected with one of the diseases 'mental' What does it mean disease 'mental'? Usually we just realized if there are incidents. Worse yet is there any event we are still not aware of as well. Worse yet, it still has not changed much.
We were crammed with knowledge of Japan is earthquake country so that every elementary school children have learned how to escape from the quake.

Then why every child in Japan are trained to prepare ourselves to face an earthquake, but in other countries (including Indonesia) are not? (At least before the tsunami). It was not because of the earthquake and the disaster we are less than Japan but acknowledged the concerns and lives and the lives that are lacking.
After the tsunami we are just beginning to repay the earthquake education (still not a national), and even had to invite the United Nations and foreign aid to teach children about the earthquake. A science which ought to have ruled our nation decades ago.

It seems so funny education in many countries (including Indonesia). The children struggling to learn about the position of this city how much latitude degrees west longitude east, etc., that even that lesson is not used all his life, but essential knowledge concerning personal safety is not taught. Many things are taught is not important, more important things to be ignored.
How many more victims are needed to give the awareness of policy makers to better prepare the nation better prepared for disasters? How many more events that should happen, so we are more concerned so as not to result in disaster.

Tsunami in Aceh (Indonesia) may be minimized if there is a higher education. I remember when covering the island of Sabang, Aceh. The island was much closer than the center of the tsunami but fewer victims. At the time when the water receded some say, if there are earthquakes low tide there will be a big wave comes, they finally climbed into the hills. The information was at least saved some lives. Supported countur Sabang hilly land. (When I interview the person he said he knew that when attending an earthquake in Sulawesi).

That also happened in an other island (I forget his name, because who covered another friend). The island nearest the epicenter were included but the victim bit. There was knowledge of a known hereditary society that if there is water receded after the earthquake there will be a big wave coming. (They say they know that since the Japanese occupation). This knowledge is not known to the people of Banda Aceh and most major cities first. Even when the water receded a lot of people who go down to the beach because a lot of fish in coastal tergelepar suddenly subsided.
Maybe it helps me refresh our memories about the anticipation of a tsunami. Tsunami in Indonesia and Japan in general is a local tsunami, where the time between the earthquake and tsunami wave arrival between 20 to 30 minutes (gugling.com / identify-traits-tsunami.html). To avoid more casualties occur, we must recognize the characteristics of the tsunami. The signs of the coming tsunami in coastal areas are:

1. Sea water receded abruptly (Happened in Aceh).
2. Salty smell was terrible.
3. From a distance appear white waves and a very loud rumbling sound (It also happens ketiika I covered the tsunami in Pangandaran beach July 17, 2006 (Indonesia), they say a voice warplanes attacked and they see a white line in the sea close to). These characteristics are also important to avoid flash floods in rivers. Anyway if you hear thunder on the river, just out of the way (this also I know when covering flash floods in Bahorok in Bukit Lawang in North Sumatra on 2 November 2003.

Tsunamis occur when:

* Big earthquake with the strength of earthquakes> 6.3 magnitude
* The location of the epicenter in the sea
* Shallow depth <40 km
* There was a vertical deformation of seafloor

We can not fight nature, but we can minimize the victim with the knowledge.
We do not know when there are natural disasters, but we can prepare ourselves by training. We can not prohibit the tsunami or earthquake, but we have a communication that could minimize casualties. Tsunamis can go with speed 800km/jam in water. Seismic waves can go with speed 3200km/jam in the soil. But the radio signal could penetrate the speed of 300,000 km / sec. That is still a chance that the warning (Tim Radford: The Guardian).

The disaster must have come? Our choice is we want to be better prepared to deal with or think "see what happens."
May Allah protect. GBU all.
